Tan Sri Zakaria Ali was a Malaysian diplomat who served as his country’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York and concurrently as High Commissioner to Canada from 1970 to 1974. In 1984 he became Secretary General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and later served as High Commissioner to Australia before retiring in 1989. He is well known for his role as chief negotiator in efforts to normalize Malaysia’s relations with China in the mid-1970s.
